The referee who made a New Jersey high school wrestler cut his dreadlocks right before a match has been suspended from his position for two years, state officials announced.

right before a match in order to be allowed to compete — a case that ignited debate over abuse of power and cultural bias — has been suspended from his position for two years, state officials announced Wednesday.

The punishment against Alan Maloney, who officiated the match last December, was reached between the state's Division on Civil Rights and the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association. In addition to Maloney being suspended for two wrestling seasons, officials and staff involved in high school athletics across New Jersey must participate in implicit bias training.

"Student athletes should be able to compete with each other on a level playing field," New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal."Racial discrimination in the enforcement of the rules of any sport is inconsistent with the spirit of fair play. The Division on Civil Rights' action today makes it less likely that any student athlete will have to endure discrimination that not only undermines fair competition but also violates our state laws.

Referee Alan Maloney forced high school wrestler Andrew Johnson to cut his dreadlocks during a match. The Division on Civil Rights also issued guidance on how racial discrimination can be based on one's hairstyle, which it says occurs when certain physical traits, like hair, are"inextricably intertwined with or closely associated with race.

Officials with the state athletics association said the new rules will help"ensure that a situation like this does not happen in the future."

My son is being told that he needs to cut his hair down short or be put off the college team or moved to the jv team. I don’t understand.

Dreads are a protruding object against the rules, they shouldn’t have let him wrestle.... doesn’t pay to be nice! Now add your special needs version with no knowledge of the sport, rules, or crazy lengths athletes go through to abide by THE RULES! ACCEPTABLE RACISM AGAINST WHITE!

Suspended? He should have been fired a long time ago! Action should also be taken against the coaches who allowed this young man to be disrespected and violated.

Good

Needle_of_Arya 2y is just right enough for the kid to have his locks grow back 🙁💔

Why did it take so long to do something? Kids have the right to wear their hair anyway they choose, it is hair . Cut , shave , grow it , have none or lots it's your choice or Gods not a teacher or referee.

Should be a lifetime ban but glad they did something

That’s it?

How dare him, Fire him!

What took so long to figure this out?

Suspended He shouldn’t be allowed to abuse children EVER AGAIN!

Is this for real? They are just *now* suspending this guy

Oh my gosh! Really how stupid.

Give him his job back but sentence him to two years of community service giving free haircuts to the needy. That would be epic!

GOOD

Great.....now I can sleep tonight.

Good. That was disgusting.

My grandson who is an excellent basketball player and student is going through this very thing right now. It's his first year of college and coach has made him run extra laps and threatened to kick him off the team and out of school because of his hair.

I just don't understand this sick obsession that a lot of white people have with black people's hair all of a sudden.

Good. cdnmedia this is actual racism, not dressing up as Aladdin for an Arabian Nights event

F*CK That. ObeyTheRulesBoy

Should of been fired

He should’ve forced a forfeit

Good

Trump delivers 'false choice' for Latinos between country, racial identity: ExpertsPresident Donald Trump sought to woo Latino voters during a campaign swing through New Mexico Monday, touting his electoral appeal with that key voting bloc. As if Trump really cares for Latinos, or anyone not white, blond, and Norwegian. “Country” 'Experts'. What a laugh. POTUS has them pegged for the frauds that they are. People don't need the intellectual and political elite to dictate to them as in HillaryClinton smearing his supporters with the Deplorables label. They can and will decide for themselves their reality.
