The city of Austin now joins other major cities like Fort Worth, Denver, San Francisco, and New York in making this change – one first responders say will keep everyone safe.Bullock says the city’s shift to make the city’s police scanners encrypted and away from the public is one that will prove beneficial in the larger picture.
“People being able to hear what door we’re going into, how many officers are coming, a plan that’s being developed. So, there are a lot of tactical considerations,” he said. Neither Smith nor Bullock are too concerned about the lack of transparency with access to the scanners being gone for the public. They both say public information offices will step in and bridge that gap.“We want to give public information, we just set up the public data portal to where we’re putting out crime statistics, we’re putting out hotspot information, we’re putting out a lot of different information. It’s just not the real-time aspect,” said Bullock.
