Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has declared Japan will achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050 in his first policy speech after taking over from Shinzo Abe.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga delivers his policy speech during an extraordinary Diet session at the lower house of parliament in Tokyo Monday, Oct. 26, 2020. Suga declared Japan will achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050 in his first policy speech after taking over from Shinzo Abe. The policy speech Monday at the outset of the parliamentary session set an ambitious agenda reflecting Suga's pragmatic approach to getting things done.

He said he intends to make a sustainable economy a pillar of his growth strategy and “put maximum effort into achieving a green society.” That includes creating a carbon-free society by 2050. But it is unclear how resource-scarce Japan might attain the goal of weaning itself from polluting fossil fuels. The country’s current energy plan, set in 2018, calls for 22-24% of Japan’s energy to come from renewables, 20-22% from nuclear power and 56% from fossil fuels such as oil, coal and gas.

In the immediate term, measures to curb the pandemic while reviving the economy are the top priority, Suga said.

And already Hiroshige Sekō, Secretary General of the Senate, suggests building NEW nuclear power plants... Suga says “will put safety first in pursuing his nuclear power policy”

When will he announce the halting of hunting whole families of dolphins in Taiji for marine industry profits, under the mask of “tradition” for food, that they rarely consume? So marine environment doesn’t matter but carbon does? doublestandards Taiji Dolphin_Project 💔🐬💔

Vote Biden!

With the way their demographic situation is trending, that's because there'll be zero people.

He's gonna kill jobs! What about freedom?

Looks like he and Trump won’t be friends.

Isn’t it nice to see other countries moving forward, while here in the USA, we have been in a very dark time, moving backwards, towards a horrific chaotic time. An evil has entered America, & is strangling our ideals. What an absolute WASTE these past four years w/Trump have been

So... less plastics? Can almost not imagine how Japan would return to glass bottles alone, given the staggering number of plastic bottles used per day.

Good for Japan.

I'm not sure what that means, but it doesn't seem realistic. That's like saying that no one is going to be flying a 30-year-old plane into Japan, or 30-year-old cars will no longer be used. I suspect there's a translation issue here. Maybe carbon neutral using carbon buybacks?

Suitably far enough into the future for anybody to hold him accountable. I today declare that I’ll master time travel by 2050.

TurnbullMalcolm What is exactly meant by zero carbon emissions? 🤔

Leadership

QuentinDempster It'll be too late by then 🤷🏻‍♂️

Serious question and no criticism intended: 2050 is 30 years away. Why would something like this take that long?

Lies

Wasn’t JoeBiden just talking about this?! Why do we want leadership that’s behind the curve? We don’t! Let’s get out front and stay there!

billmaher BillGates algore JoeBiden KamalaHarris We should be ahead, not behind Japan, but it will not happen with realDonaldTrump & GOP at the helm. I’m very sick (stage 4 cancer) yet also VERY CONCERNED for the future of this country & the world... so I voted!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

So are they going to kill all the people too... Zero carbon?

Ok, banning lolicon when?

He’s down for the agenda

👏👏😷

😃😃🌏🌱🌳

emissions

ErykBagshaw So different to the delay & denier response from Australian PM Scott Morrison. auspol ausecon ClimateAction zeroemissions

And the government doesn’t need to do it, the private sector will

Sounds sweet, Suga man

We have Japan announcing plans for zero carbon emissions by 2050, China by 2060, the EU and Britain announcing similar plans...but the US and its wannabe dictator announcing a continuing need for fossil fuels because of his disbelief in the science and his usual fear-mongering.

Why not scrap the plan to dump nuclear waste on the Pacific Ocean?

Lol good luck with that

It's a start.

Way too late

And they will as well.

TurnbullMalcolm And Australia?

👏🏻👏🏻!It takes time to solve the problem of carbon emissions!

How about so killing whales and sharks by 20-Fucking yesterday!

TurnbullMalcolm 👌

What the hell? 71 years old? Time to end the goddamn patriarchy. We don't need old men running countries. We need younger people and more women. Their time is done!

And here in the U.S. we will achieve zero progress in... ...everything. Just about everything

100% nuclear

2050 is too late.

China?... anything?...😂😂🤔

Well, it’s not like the US was ever gonna lead on that. We gave up after the space race.

Why climate is a winning issue for Democrats“The polling landscape for climate, at this point, is that it is genuinely a popular and persuasive issue,” Charlotte Swasey says. “56% of voters say they they’re more likely to support a presidential candidate who pledges to achieve 100% clean energy.” '56%of Democratic voters they mean. 100% of both of my cats believe I should vote for Joe Biden. So at least half our country doesn't want to, essentially, commit slow suicide. Awesome. Hopefully more will decide to not end all life on Earth as we know it soon. Doubtful, but hopefully.
