Austin police release body cam video of April 6 shooting of armed man, 31, during apartment disturbance; suspect survived, investigation ongoing.

On April 6, an Austin police officer shot 31-year-old Avelino Medel II, who was armed with a gun, during a disturbance at a southwest Austin apartment complex; body camera footage of the incident has now been released. The incident happened Saturday, April 6, at the Cliffs at Barton Creek Apartments at 3050 Tamarron Blvd.

According to the Austin Police Department, officers responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting a physical disturbance inside an apartment at approximately 1:56 a.m. Upon arrival, Officer Gabriel Walker Prado, positioned near the rear patio area, observed Medel armed with a gun through the sliding glass door. As Medel walked towards the front door where other officers had announced their presence, Officer Walker Prado shouted "gun, gun, gun" and discharged his firearm, striking Medel.

The newly released body camera footage from Officer Walker Prado and Officer Adam Reinhart, who was at the front door, captures the moments leading up to and immediately following the shooting. The video shows officers rendering first aid to Medel. APD stated that Medel's firearm was recovered in close proximity to where he fell, and no charges are currently pending, though the case remains under active investigation.

Officer Walker Prado, who has seven months of service with APD, has been placed on administrative leave per department protocol. The APD's Special Investigations Unit and Internal Affairs Unit are conducting concurrent investigations into the incident.
