For many Latinos, soccer is almost a religion. And Diego Armando Maradona, who died Wednesday at 60, was a saint for the faithful.

I always get good vibes from it and love seeing a Latino displayed on a mural in the nation's capital.

As a morenita Mexican-Colombian kid growing up in surfer-centric Southern California, seeing Maradona beat West Germany in Mexico City was huge. I've never met my South American family and I've always been aware that I was different from the rest of my very Mexican extended family, but when Argentina won, none of that mattered and we all partied so hard. That Hand of God goal against the British was the stuff every colonized country dreams of.

You mean football?

💕😪✌️

Not really. He was a great player. For many, the best in history. The rest, better to forgive and forget.

he was also a patron saint of doping and fornicating

Football Life

AkumaSnow

Maradona was no saint, he was a legendary futbol player.

Almost? 🤷🏽‍♂️ 🙄

For many Latinos.... Football is a religion for a lot more countries than “South Americans” . For matter of fact, If there ever was a “Diego’s cathedral” it would be in Napoli, Italy.

'Latinos'? 🤣You guys are so out of touch is funny. This guy was idolized from London to Tokyo.

That is superbly written. An homage in 2 sentences. RIP legend.

Maradona was not a saint... matadora is a God

RIP, Diego.

Well , you know , there is this Continent called Europe...they invented “soccer” I mean football, the real football.

he did more of the Colombian white bang bang than he score goals, and on top of that a certifiable Communist rubbing shoulders w/ Castro. GTFOH

'For many PEOPLE**, FOOTBALL** is almost a religion.' Fixed it for you. Plus: Learn how to make a headline FFS!!

For every fucking body who prays at the alter of the beautiful game you never ever ever call it soccer. It's FÚTBOL. From the Bundesliga to La Liga to the USWNT it is a religion. Maradona

RIP

There are no Latinos that equate soccer with religion.

More than just a saint, he’s God... D10S 🇦🇷

My brother’s (former US Nat’l team & NASL Pro) oldest son is named Diego. RIPMaradona

'For many Latinos...' Really? Ignorant. And you claim to be some superior form of media.

No my dear NPR, for Argentina Maradona was God (D10S) because football is a religion AdiosDiego

Pelé is now 80.

If you call it soccer you will never understand

I wonder why NPR doesn’t bring up his work for the downtrodden in South America alongside the likes of Hugo Chavez and Castro hmmmm

No. Please, stop. Religion is made up but soccer is not a religion. Jesus,Christ!
