of the Forum on Medical and Public Health Preparedness for Disasters and Emergencies of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine."It's not at all unexpected that we're going to have some worse outcomes."Hospitals have a road map for how to manage during a catastrophe. It's called crisis standards of care, and it guides clinical and ethical decisions on how to triage care when resources are tight.
During the current surge, hospitals are again grappling with tricky decisions around how far you can stretch care. These death rates — measured as the ratio of average daily deaths to hospitalizations in a state — are going up in places like South Dakota, Wisconsin and Montana. Last week, for example, South Dakota had 4.4 deaths for every 100 patients hospitalized each day. The U.S. overall had fewer than two deaths per 100 hospitalizations each day.by the federal government, it's difficult to tell if this trend is driven by hospital capacity issues or other factors like the age and severity of patients.
How many ICU patients can a single nurse handle? When is it OK to discharge patients early to free up space? Who gets moved to a field hospital with fewer staff members? At St. Luke's Health System in Idaho, hundreds of COVID-19 patients are being sent home with blood pressure cuffs, pulse oximeters and iPads so their vitals can be monitored remotely in case their conditions deteriorate. The hospital has also set up ICU doctors to look after multiple patients via telehealth so their expertise can go as far as possible.
Seriously? Some of the doctors may be so traumatized by this experience they may not be able to effectively practice medicine as well over the next ten years? How about all the doctors that had to tend to soldiers during war? Years of it. It’s tough, but...
US combat deaths in WW2 ---291,557. By the end of the first week in December, US covid fatalities are likely to exceed those combat deaths.
Doesn’t make sense given plunging death rates. Our main hospital in a large Nor. CA city not even near overwhelmed, or near capacity as it goes....
- Wear a mask😷 Wash your hands🤲 Don't gather in groups🤼♂️🤼♀️ These are not difficult requests. Respect yourself. Respect your loved ones. Respect your neighbors. Respect healthcare workers. Respect all those who show up every day to feed, transport, & support us every day.
When all the beds are full, all the hospitals at capacity, no more nurses & doctors available....then if you don't get covid, you will have no place to go with a heart attack, a car accident, or anything else that is an emergency...no room left. THIS is what on the brink is.
Heart wrenching
I’m a teacher in metro Atlanta, and our area is increasing in numbers. Many of us are filling in for other teachers during our planning periods because there aren’t enough subs. I’m happy to help fill those gaps, and I’m healthy, but it’s scary. I don’t want friends to be sick.
Thanks to the idiots who think they're immune from Covid19! Hate to see the deaths go up. Maybe it was Trump's plan to kill off like Hitler or Jim Jones!
And sadly, the worst is yet to come...
I bet trump’s rallies contributed to the upsurge. His denial of the seriousness of the virus definitely did.
Probably most of them are Trump supporters. So who cares!
and many idiots won't do a thing to slow the spread
Well...that is what happens after a flu shot. At the facility I am familiar with...the countdown began once the flu shots were administered. Masks didn’t help them...lol..nor the shields...
what a nightmare
Crazy times indeed...
What are y’all going to report when this pandemic ends in a few months
