There’s a lot of talk about functional fashion happening right now. Work-from-home life and lessened social schedules have encouraged shoppers to reduce their wardrobes to only the most essential, useful things. The list of 2021 must-haves might include a puffer coat for warmth, a stretchy legging for ease, and a graphic top for Zoom calls. But what about fashion that services your mind? For that, the Californian designer James Flemons can help.
He does it by being deeply in tune with what it means to be alive right now. Before the COVID pandemic, Flemons found himself in an isolation of his own: Living 35 miles south of L.A. without a car and any access to friends, the city, or production. “I was just stuck at home, in this bubble, designing and creating. I kind of went through all of these things that everyone has gone through now already,” he says. “I saw all of these patterns that I see everyone else going through.
