Palo Alto, which turned its season around after a 1-6 start, came back from a 10-point third-quarter deficit to defeat Monterey 27-24 and win the Central Coast Section Division V title at Sequoia High School.
On Friday night, there were many heroes for the Vikings , who won their first CCS football title since 2010. After a long Monterey drive ended in a punt, the Dores recovered a Palo Alto fumble on the Vikings’ 19. But on a first-and-goal play from the 7, Palo Alto’s Kai Bussey delivered the defensive play of the game with an interception in the end zone.
But Palo Alto still was trailing, and it took a 99-yard drive on the ensuing possession to take the lead. Vikings quarterback Declan Packer was sacked and called down on Palo Alto’s 1-yard-line. But after a 12-yard run by Madrigal got his team away from its end zone, Palo Alto responded with three big plays in a row: a 32-yard pass from Packer to Bussey, a 25-yard reception by Jason Auzenne from Packer and a 30-yard run by Jack Newman in which he broke tackle attempts on his way to the end zone.
