A look at the Snohomish County memorial site for the Oso landslide victims on March 22, 2024, on the 10th anniversary of the deadliest landslide in United States history. Tim Ward acknowledged it has been hard to look at the spot off Highway 530 and not get emotional.
“I looked into the family room, and there was my wife looking toward the mountain with fear in her eyes. Then, she looked at me, and we reached out toward each other. And in the blink of an eye, she was gone.” Dayn Brunner, whose sister Summer Raffo was killed by the slide, was instrumental in building support for the memorial. He spent days searching for Raffo after that horrible March Day and says he hates looking at the scarp. Raffo was driving on Highway 530 at the time.
“This is where a mountain kind of came down and killed six members of my family. This particular spot is where our family's panel is,” said Jessica Pszonka as she stood in front of the individual memorial, within the memorial. There is a dedicated panel for each of the families impacted by the slide.
