At 10:37 a.m. on March 22, 2014, the rain-soaked hillside above the community of Steelhead Haven, near Oso, Washington, in Snohomish County, collapsed. Around 18 million tons of sand, mud and debris — enough to cover about 700 football fields 10 feet deep — tore across the north fork of the Stillaguamish River at 40 mph, devastating the rural community.Community members immediately jumped into action to help with the search and rescue effort.
The Washington State Transportation Commission renamed a 23-mile section of SR 530 to the "Oso Slide Memorial Highway” in 2019.of the disaster to “honor those who were lost in the event, the survivors, the responders, and the surrounding communities.” A remembrance ceremony will be held at the memorial site starting at 10 a.m. Friday, with a site dedication ceremony scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
