2019 was a milestone year for women in film. But the Best Director Oscar nominees were, yet again, all male

Photo: Getty Images The 92nd Academy Awards, announced this morning, were led by the usual slate of male directors and their movies. Todd Phillips led with 11 nominations for Joker, followed by Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, and Sam Mendes’s 1917, which tied with ten nominations each.

This is less surprising than it is disappointing, given that 2019 was a milestone year for women in film. Not only were there more women-made movies in 2019 than ever before, many of them were critically acclaimed and made a ton of money, with a dozen of the top-grossing 100 movies of 2019 directed by women.

“It’s incredibly upsetting,” Florence Pugh, who starred in the film and got a Best Supporting Actress nod, told EW on Monday. “[Gerwig] literally made a film about this,” she continued, “about women working and their relationship with money and their relationship with working in a man’s world … So [this] only underlines how important it is — because it’s happening.

Maybe, just maybe the males were the best.

They should do a best male director & best female director imo. I think the directors nominated had better films, regardless of color or gender, but that’s just my opinion.

Oscars so male, but also you neglect to mention in the headline that they’re also so white and American, so I feel like bongs picture doesn’t belong in this thumbnail

(via toofab) TooFab You shouldn’t get nominated because of your race or your sex or to fill a quota. That’s not fair. TooFab Well she can’t very well say men and women, when there isn’t any TooFab Women should be nominated not because they are the best, but because they have vaginas, because equality! Makes sense.

Backlash Grows as Oscars Snub Women Directors Yet AgainHollywood’s outcry is growing over Oscar nominations in the best director category, which again ignored women filmmakers on Monday. Instead of recognizing Greta Gerwig for “Little Women… Wow, Greta is amazing and yes, deserved a nom, but when the argument you have can so easily be discarded by simple math it speaks loudly about how insane some people are when they WANT to see prejudice. The Academy should just give all Awards to a multi Racial, Agnostic, Vegan, Trans, MeToo victim, and call it a night. Not commenting on the movie, which I didnt see but the idea of 'Best Picture must have Best Director' why have two categories then?
