So apparently it’s not a question of money, so much as it is a question of priorities. In prioritizing raises for its highest paid administrators over the hourly workers who directly serve patients and students, the UC Board of Regents is only hurting the institution they profess to serve.
UC is not powerless in the face of this crisis. It has the power to make different choices. Investing in wages that keep pace with rising costs will make UC competitive in a tight labor market for the frontline workers it needs. It will help tens of thousands of vulnerable working students and career employees find housing near their jobs. And above all, it’s the right and moral thing to do.
