Opinion | Ani Bundel: Netflix's new Ricky Gervais comedy 'After Life' wants us to see the comedian's kinder side. - NBCNewsTHINK

These are Ricky Gervais's last gasps at relevancy. The comedy world is moving on to more thoughtful, exciting things, and he can feel himself being left behind. Rather than evolve, he's becoming a cranky old man. It's sad to see.Gervais uses this persona as the jumping off point for his newest series. In it, Gervais plays Tony, though he might as well be playing Ricky.

But a funny thing happens on the way to Angryville. It almost seems like Gervais is aware many viewers won’t see much daylight between his real-life persona and the character he’s playing, and so he tries to use the latter to soften the former. Suddenly, jarringly, the series slides in the other direction, and the entire production turns to discussions of grief, hope and rebuilding.

THINK I think the author is missing some of the points. The early episodes were more grim, but the things that “save” Tony are there from the start. His reasons to live have always been there. And if dealing with real depression wasn’t “jarring”, a lot more people could cope with it.

THINK I Trust his humor definition

THINK I think it’s fantastic. I wish the season had been longer.

THINK That's non-real.

THINK Should there be a warning associated with it like ‘13 Reasons Why’?

THINK LOVED this show.

THINK Can't stand him. Just can't bring myself to even entertain the notion of watching it.
