Sometime in 2023, Donald Trump will presumably make the most momentous decision by a single person affecting the fate of the Republican Party in decades.

Trump’s continued sway has been a boon to Trumpists — the former president’s most hardcore cadre — but it is a problem for Trumpism, at least if that term is to mean anything more than personal loyalty to the man himself. His staying power risks overshadowing and distorting the development of the populist wing of the party in particular, which should be about more than Stop the Steal and adherence to one man.

His voters still think he’s the only one in the GOP who truly gets the threat from the left, and the only one willing to fight with the ferocity that’s called for. Mitch McConnell, who has made his disdain for Trump and his outrage over January 6 clear enough, has taken the more prudent course of declining to elaborate on his well-known views, and isn’t going to be ousted anytime soon .

The Trump effect can be seen starkly in Ohio Republican politics. One would think Rep. Anthony Gonzalez, who was a featured speaker last year at an event of the populist policy shop American Compass on how to forge a working-class conservatism would have more populist credibility than Senate primary candidate Josh Mandel, who has a long record as a run-of-the-mill establishment Republican.

How can anyone in their right mind, ever trust a republican when they blatantly lie about everything. They are trump. We all know what we saw. Breaking windy, beating cops, stealing is not orderly. Would you call it that if black people done the same? Stop the damn lies!!

I hope the DOJ makes the most momentous decision ... nobody is above the law .. right

In the Roman times, the Commander usually controls Rome ..

2015 deja vu article, try harder. Biden will make it easy for him.

Long live DONALD TRUMP! BIDEN=0

Hopefully, in 2023, Trump will be playing in a prison yard in an orange jump suit chanting his mantra, “I won in 2020; I won in 2020; I won in 2020”.

If Politico says its a bad idea, its really a good idea.

I look forward to seeing him lose a third time.👏

From Prison.

Let's just pray he'll be in prison by then!

He can’t go to the bathroom by himself. How is he going to do anything else?

Thumbsy-Upsy, the Orange Shitgibbon is going to change the world again all by his widdle self. Can't wait for you to report how he changed his own diapers as a child, like Kim Jung Un.

It seems the opinion writers for Politico accept the notion that trump will not be a convict, jailed and ineligible to run for office, which implies that they accept, rather than oppose, the idea that some Americans are above the law.

Trump has no intention to run again for President as he knows it would be almost impossible for him to win in spite of Republican corruption — but he will pretend to run in order to fleece the flock and fatten the Trump mob family coffer.

Wasn't his first decision to run, which very literally transformed the party of traditional conservative values into an insane cult of personality and almost ended democracy, the most momentous decision by a single person affecting the fate of the Republican Party in decades?

Hopefully the prison that he's in by then- will be the only thing 'blotting out the sun'

Seriously? Trump is done in politics. He will be lucky to avoid prison.

That’s if he isn’t found guilty on any charges🤔😳

Trump's huge ego can't stand that he lost the election...let's see if he wants to run the risk of becoming a two time loser.

Yes, agreed.

I'm curious: What makes you think Individual -1 won't be in prison?

In 2023, Trump will be in prison.

Hopefully all of those Big Macs & fries will congregate in just the right spot in an artery, and we won’t have to find out.

Since it’s not happening till 2023, how about we talk about it then?

If there's any justice he'll be in prison by 2023.
