On this day in 1967, Aretha Franklin, the “Queen of Soul,” hits No. 1 on the Billboard singles chart with the song, “Respect.”

On this day in 1967 by Jerry Mitchell, Mississippi Today June 3, 2024 JUNE 3, 1967 Film poster for the documentary about Aretha Franklin’s 1972 concert, which was released in 2018. Aretha Franklin, the “Queen of Soul,” hits No. 1 on the Billboard singles chart with her cover of Otis Redding’s song, “Respect.” She changed the lyrics and transformed the tune, which became a powerful anthem for both women and the civil rights movement.

  Frranklin went on to sell more than 75 million records, including her live album, “Amazing Grace”, one of the best-selling gospel albums of all time, which is also captured in a riveting documentary.  Before her death, she was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
