NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- The state comptroller dealt New York City's Department of Homeless Services a scathing audit, saying the department is failing to connect homeless people with the proper resources. In the audit, data from 2018 and 2022 revealed more than a quarter of people diagnosed with mental illness and nearly half of people diagnosed with drug or alcohol abuse were not placed in appropriate shelters.According to statistics from the mayor's office, city employees cleared 3,198 homeless encampments – or 14 sites a day – from public spaces between March 18 and the end of October, which also includes multiple sweeps of the same locations. Some of them were linked to two recent murders, an attempted murder, a robbery, a shelter suicide and two drug overdoses. There's a lot of homeless people that they just talk to themselves because they going through something. The Adams administration did not provide information on how long those individuals stayed and did not immediately respond to requests for comment. So I don't think it's right," Toni Hayes, who is homeless, said."These new protocols and trainings will ensure that agencies and systems responsible for connecting our community members with severe mental illnesses to treatments are working in unison to get them the support they need and deserve," Wong said.

This report came after the mayor announced a new directive that allows police to force homeless people suffering from mental illnesses into hospitals. On Tuesday, Adams ramped up his approach, announcing that the city will involuntarily hospitalize people suffering from mental illness even if they pose no overt threat to themselves or others. Some homeless people are speaking out against this policy."Personally, I believe that everybody has freedom, a will. But homeless advocates have blasted the mayor’s encampment sweeps since they began in the spring, saying they only chase people from one location to another and don't address the underlying problems that cause homelessness. This is America.Everybody has a choice to get treatment," Elijah Murphy, who is homeless, said. The thousands of sweeps that the city has conducted are horrific and are part and parcel of the city’s war on poor and homeless New Yorkers,” said Karim Walker, an organizer and outreach worker at the Safety Net Project of the Urban Justice Center.

Despite any resistance, the mayor doubled down yesterday and told reporters he would not "punt" on the issues like previous mayors.ALSO READ |.The fact that the city knows this and continues to conduct these sweeps is deplorable and is little more than political theater," Walker added.
