Adams' policies drew criticism from advocates for homeless people.
"Mayor Adams continues to get it wrong when it comes to his reliance on ineffective surveillance, policing, and involuntary transport and treatment of people with mental illness," Jacquelyn Simone, policy director for the Coalition for the Homeless, said in aon Tuesday."Homeless people are more likely to be the victims of crimes than the perpetrators, but Mayor Adams has continually scapegoated homeless people and others with mental illness as violent.
"These new protocols and trainings will ensure that agencies and systems responsible for connecting our community members with severe mental illnesses to treatments are working in unison to get them the support they need and deserve," Wong said. However, others are unsure if the city has the infrastructure it needs for emergency medical response. New York City public advocate Jumaane D. Williams said the city needs to invest millions into its approach to the ongoing mental health crisis.
Complicated! A relative had a severe mental health event and stopped eating -- just sat in a chair. We tried to get them help but the MDs kept saying, 'Are they a danger to themself or others? If the answer is No we can't force them to get help.' Not excusing Adams, but... Hmm!
Deemed by who?
When you're psychologically I'll, you lack the ability to make informed decisions about your own interests. This is for their own good and both they and the public will be safer as a result. People claiming mentally ill people should be running wild aren't arguing morality.
These are not poor people, for the most part. They are I’ll and can’t take care of themselves. Hospitalization is what they need.
So many complaining but Mayor Beam closed all the mental hospitals in nyc, the homeless issue exploded. There's no cute quiet way to deal with a problem started almost 50 years ago. When someone who's had all the help in the world, stops their meds then haves an episode then what
This sets a precedent for unlawful imprisonment.
Whoa
Seems a bit Hitlarian don't ya think?
ACLU Where you at?
Putting responsibility on the hospital systems and telling them they have to hold them until a facility is available is troubling. Many hospitals are already understaffed and in financial trouble.
UN_Women There is no consensus about what mental stability is, America's system is FOR PROFT and rooted in white supremacy. This is no different from the prison scheme that targets the most vulnerable for ethnic cleansing. UNWatch UNOSAPG ICJ_org
Whether the person wants to be taken in or not, they will be taken... My trust issues won't let believe this is for the best. I truly hope it's help to somebody but what happens to their belongings n such?
5150 in full effect…
What do you mean 'involuntary hospitalization'? What are the legal implications? Is this a rerun of now defunct vagrancy laws, or god-forbid, debtor's prison? Sounds like a slippery slope to me.
Housing. First. Period. Maybe these wealthy policy makers need to spend a few winter nights on the streets to really “get it.”
Even if they haven’t shown to be a danger to self or others
Then when they are better you put them back on the street?
A lot of homeless people are mentally ill and/or on drugs. As long as the care is helpful, I don’t see a problem. The street isn’t a better place for them.
Just reconstruct the corrupt court system that does not care who they make homeless. Equalization is a thing of the past. I was put into $25,000 in debt in one month by the family court during a worldwide pandemic while unemployed. Heartless is the judicial system that has tenure
Americans are weird. People in the comments rather the homeless live cold and without mental health services
It's about what you take and how much of it. The door to this pandora box was making companies pay for health insurance and accepting that it be law that citizens buy health insurance. Then we accepted it to be law to take a vaccine. And I say, enough, is enough.
'Mayor Adams decides that housing the homeless is more expensive than forced asylum' is your alternate headline here
Bizarre. Psychiatry is the worst way to solve things, esp. involuntary psychiatry.
Please promote the 12-Step programs DualRecoveryAnonymous and DoubleTroubleInRecovery. Most of these people suffer from psychiatric or emotional illness and chemical dependency. These simple programs can transform and save lives.
Because forced asylum care always works…
Doesn’t seem legal to force people into treatment like this. Yikes.
Absolutely disgusting. Do this with any other demographic and there would be well-warranted outcries about human rights abuses. But when a mayor, a Democratic mayor no less, does it to the unhoused, barely a whisper of protest.
This is illegal ADA is a federal law
This is a stupid plan
How many lawsuits are coming
The psychiatric crisis lies within our leadership. Lawmakers, politicians, CEOs, clergy. All of them.
This news article is terrible. The opinion of the industrial homeless complex is not a valid one. We’ve thrown so much tax payer money at this, and we still see more and more suffering in the streets. This is a step in the right direction, and inner-city dwellers agree.
Disappearing ppl isn't going to solve any problems it will only make things worse.
Let the human testing begin. Start with organ extraction for riches.
How many people who actually aren't homeless are going to be made homeless because they're locked up due 'psychiatric crisis'? Because we know they won't actually check properly to see if they are homeless and those imprisoned won't be allowed to make arrangements for rent.
Now nurses will have to be baby sitters on top of everything else they have to do.
I'm with this. There's already too many crackheads standing in the middle of the street trying to bum change off of people stuck at a red light. Y'all are just afraid that gender dysphoria will finally get counted as the mental disease it is. 💀😂
Any help is better than the current no help they receive. Certainly the prison system isn’t a help. Since all of the mental health institutions were shutdown (and not without reason) there has never been anything in place to fill the gaping hole left behind.
If it means people will be safer this is good.
Bravo for having the balls to force treatment to those obviously mentally ill homeless who are a danger to themselves and others. Good for the homeless. Good for the community! Wish my city did the same.
It's about time...help is on the way
Huh. So far how long will they receive this “care” and then what will happen to them? NYC slashed their budget and doesn’t have enough facilities and staff. Sounds like insane asylum lockups all over again. We’ve come full circle.
What a sane idea. Those in a psychiatric crisis need help and can’t make good decisions
It's the best thing he's done (if they let him).
NYCMayor Public admission every State n America we messed up!People w/challenges were sent here 2 teach us & 2 b taken care of by us we turn up our noses&thru them on2 the street now they r wreaking havoc! Not enough 2 take them off the street they r 2 b treated w/dignity/respect
This will be, and already has been, abused! This move is not motivated by genuine desire to improve the outcomes of these folks. Cops escalate mental health crises. These short term holds are just a bandaid. Invest in long term resources & the social workers actually helping.
About damn time. They need their own facility though, you ran out of beds during covid…
What a racist!!!
You people are unreal, first you crap on NY for crime, then you crap on a perfectly good solution. These homeless people are crazy and responsible for a lot of the crime.
'involuntarily providing care' aka kidnapping and drugging without consent.
Fingers crossed 🤞 for better outcomes for the homeless population.
I mean what’s the solution to rampant homelessness
The end of individual liberty all over again
Good!!!!
Does this include gender dysphoria?
He is what you get with 23% turnout. Vote, New Yorkers!
You can’t involuntarily treat people against their will. There’s no “gray” about it. What an absolute worthless, draconian plan.
Oh this should be a reality tv show cause I see people getting their buttshsnded to them by the homeless
i mean at least they will get a turkey sammie
