Verizon and AT&T went ahead with plans to turn on 5G service nationwide, except near airports after the FAA expressed concern that the high-tech radio signals would interfere with aircraft navigational systems.

These cell carriers didn’t think to check with FAA before or did they just ignore? People that fly were already aware that we have to turn off our devices during takeoff and touch down.

Why does this 5G thing sound like some sort of conspiracy theory? Anouther one of those tin-hat, 5G will infect your brain with mind-control waves, theories. And ppl are freaking out and taking a conspiracy theory seriously. 😒

This saga sounds like a fairy tale you would tell children. The altimeter is the primary part a plane flies by (Former AF supply troop). This is not a failure on anyone's part. I'm thinking somebody is taking me for a fool. Story must be fake. A joke.

This 'problem' is most likely due to the airline industry not looking to the future when there will be other activity in adjacent frequencies. Radio equipment must be designed to reject signals that are not in the frequency band they operate within. /1

I really wish the media would ask the most obvious question If 5G has been in the works for 10 years, why in all that time has it not been tested against aircraft? Nothing like waiting until the last minute

This is what they call 'Advance planning.'

Once again a failure of both government and businesses to work together on a solution. Looks like the FAA has had their head in the sand as they habe known for a while that Verizon and AT&T were deploying 5G after spending 20 billion for the rights.

Oops.

Most of wold countries have 5G, yet we dont hear US airlines boycotting those countries or getting affected by the signals. This is because airliners do not get technologically affected.

Meanwhile, at the FCC...

Can we just go back to land lines? Life seemed simpler then.

No one needs 5G. Some of us don't want to buy a new phone and they sure aren't giving us one. Cancel 5G.

Wait, will this effect my nanobots?

All these years that the FAA could've been upgrading their standards, but no

Maybe we could point out to the FAA that other countries have 5G and have had little to no issues with air traffic...

Sounds like airplanes need to upgrade their navigation systems

NPR Cookie Consent and ChoicesThey aren't about making it easier...they are about removing and reducing barriers that intentionally make it more difficult for some to vote and ensure that the People's vote isn't thrown out in favor of a dictatorship like party! In light of today's Senate debate/vote on ability to debate voting rights, and the fight between SenSchumer and LeaderMcConnell over who'll destroy America & democracy first, I ask again... They are both BS! We don’t want Nationally controlled elections!

NPR Cookie Consent and ChoicesGreat read & assessment of successes and challenges. Vax hesitancy and research expansion are definitely crucial. But when the US_FDA refuses and delays approval of WHO supported universal inactive vax (COVAXIN_USA ) from receiving EUA for 2 & up, it further increases mistrust I appreciate this but does NPR have any self awareness of the difference in the objective calm way you’re covering this disaster vs the breathless “there’s no good news” coverage of the last admin’s Covid response? Again, if your reporting is not telling people about the extensive GOP propaganda focused on diverting as many people away from science-based mitigation, this is an incomplete assessment. And one item no plan could address.
