I am Spanish American. My ancestors settled in New Mexico in 1598. I am Hispanic, not Latino. This is my ethnicity. If filling out forms, my race is still white, but I always pause before checking that box because that’s not how I identify myself.

The thing is is that I think many people dont know if Banderas is from Spain proper, or the Americas. which could make a difference between seen as european- white, or new world spanish - native american.
People also ignore that in South America they refer to themselves as White aka Caucasian. It's not until they come to the US that they are 'Brown'.

The demographic forms I use in court split ethnicity up into hispanic and non-hispanic. But this article seems to indicate that latinos, not hispanics, are the ethnic minority group the forms should be identifying. Very confusing...
