Brains affected by autism appear to share a difference in the cells that produce myelin, the 'insulation' for brain circuits that allow them to quickly and reliably carry electrical signals from one area to another.

IN MICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In mice.

There’s a reason they said brains effected by autism, rather than autistic people.... This study was done on MICE. 🐁 Not on humans.

My brain is autistic not “affected by autism.”

justsaysinmice

'brains affected by autism' lol hush

Ahh yes my brain which has been affected by autism is v incapable of finding the issue with this 😂 cause wait...maybe difference doesn’t mean worse...it just means different! Correlation does not equal causation- esp if u are incapable of understanding us in the first place

This is the type if post I like seeing from npr.. not politics

There is a lot stuff here that's going wrong, even from a scientific perspective. The say that they found lower amounts of one the brain cell that makes the protective sheaths. That doesn't mean there are fewer protective sheaths. They didn't check. They don't know if reversing

Just say autistic. Autistic is not a dirty word

“Brains affected by autism”? Seriously?

My parents, teachers, and friends are all “affected by autism”. Are you talking about them or are you talking about autistic people?

Can ya'll please write better headlines, like saying this was a test done on mice, not people.

Non-Autistics are so exhausting.

OK. As a reporter AND someone with autism, this post AND this story make me wince. The post because you actually said “brains affected by autism” like it is some external force on our brains that can be added or removed at will. /1

FatheringAutism I am curious what your opinion is on this?

Interesting tie to multiple sclerosis.

Oh do fuck of with “affected by autism”. Read across from “affected by gay”, “affected by ginger”, “affected by left handedness”

Brains are not affected by Autism. it is not cancer. Stop adding to stigma and misinformation. It's literally a neurological difference. Our brains are Autistic. We are Autistic.

It's interesting that Vitamin B-12 is essential in maintaining myelin. Could autism be related to B-12 metabolism in some way?

I'm the nobel prize watching type and, this, this has me

Not exactly breaking news to anyone dealing with autism, hence the experimental use / dosage of anti-histamines. BUT, any new studies, findings etc will help to understand and maybe make things easier, so anything is appreciated.

It's okay, you can say 'autistic.'

A consequence not a reason I think

Interesting observation.

. Einstein and Isaac Newton both shared many autistic tendencies

There's a new amnio test that detect autism, so parents can make the right choice.

Myelin is what is attacked by the immune system in Multiple Sclerosis. Interesting.

So... Not vaccines

It boggles my mind why they don’t stagger the return over weeks rather than just prepare for a mass influx.
