planned it. Let's be honest, it wasn’t the way anyone envisioned it. Notre Dame’s 21-14, penalty riddled and at times dumbfounding road win was far more pig stye than Picasso for a good portion of the night, but just one week removed from letting one slip away, Freeman’s Irish found a way to pull this one out.
The Irish trailed 14-13 and looked buried after a penalty pushed them back to their own two-yard line with 2:35 remaining. The game-winning touchdown drive began with a false start, sawgain 19 yards on one offlagged for offensive pass interference, which led to Hartman scrambling for a 17-yard gain on 4th and 16, leading to Estime’s 30-yard touchdown run on the next play, and culminated with a two-point conversion pass to Rico Flores, Jr.
Things looked bleak for most of a second half that saw Hartman complete 6 of 14 passes for 88 yards. But when the game was on the line, Freeman knew he had the right man for the job. Hartman’s crucial 4th down conversion came a week after he was stopped short on 4th and 1 runs twice in a loss to Ohio State. His 17-yard run converted Notre Dame’s third 4th down in as many chances against the Blue Devils.
