But new research published Thursday in the Cell Systems journal debunks that method. And that's because the scientists behind a new study say dogs and humans don't age at the same rate. Researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine have developed a new formula that takes into account that variance.

Well considering a dog has an avg life span of 11 years and a human , 79.. I thing the 7 year thing is a fair equivalency. Yes each animal has different cycles for example, we know a human fully matures at around the age of 24/25 whereas with a dog would be closer to a year.

Remember that a dogs years in age do not match human intelligence levels. Most dogs at maturity in human intelligence levels are that of a 3--4 year old child.
I believe it’s just a rough calculation. I doubt it necessary for people to study cynology and work algebra to figure their dogs age as related to humans.

This is stupid. The 7 year rule isn’t, nor has it ever been grounded in scientific data. It’s a good number to attribute to every dog year because dogs’s lifespan isn’t long. Average dog life is 11 years * 7 = 77. It gives comfort knowing the dog lived a good life.
