New York lawmakers moved late Friday to extend the temporary ban on most residential evictions, which would maintain the state’s tenant protections until deep into the summer

Proponents expect the bill, which has been introduced in both houses, to become law before the current moratorium expires after Friday.

In March of 2020, Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued the state’s first eviction ban, making it illegal for landlords to remove tenants who miss payments because of financial hardship during the pandemic. “Virtually every county in the state of New York still has high rates of [Covid-19] transmission,” said State Sen. Brian Kavanagh, chair of the housing committee and sponsor of the eviction-ban extension bill. Mr. Kavanagh said the ban was still needed to limit the spread of disease that could follow if there is a rise in the number of people losing their homes.
