New York and New Jersey are lifting most capacity limits on businessesto stem the spread of Covid-19 as more people get vaccinated and infections continue to decline.

Capacity limits will end May 19 for New Jersey and New York retail stores, restaurants, gyms, amusement parks, salons, barber shops, offices, museums and theaters, including Broadway, state officials said Monday. Businesses will be limited only by social-distancing measures, which require patrons and parties to be kept 6 feet apart.

The swiftness of the governor's timetable stunned the arts community, much of which had been operating under the assumption that controls would remain in effect for several more months. Still, as far as an industry such as Broadway is concerned, the May date bears no relationship to reopening reality - which even Cuomo, a Democrat, acknowledged at his Albany news conference Monday. Asked whether Cuomo's announcement took people in the theater world by surprise, one theater insider who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to comment emailed back: 'YES. EVERYONE.' Other representatives of cultural institutions and Broadway productions contacted by The Washington Post said it was too soon to disclose changes to their plans. Reopening commercial and nonprofit theaters on Broadway and off- is considered a core activity for restoring New York City's financial health. Broadway accounts for about 100,000 jobs and pumps about $14 billion annually into the city's economy. Still, as the reactions to Cuomo's announcement made plain, the runway for theater to take flight again is a fairly long one. Casts and crews must be assembled, financing arranged, rehearsals commenced and perhaps most important, tickets have to be sold in advance.
