New York becomes the second state to ban discrimination based on natural hairstyles after Gov. Cuomo signs bill amending the state’s Human Rights Law.

and takes effect Jan. 1. It adds traits historically associated with race to the state’s list of classifications protected from discrimination, including race, sex, religion, color, national origin, disability and sexual orientation.

"Policies and practices that target, profile, or single out people for natural hair styles in public places —like in the workplace, in schools, and even at the airport — disproportionately burden black people," Patricia Okonta, a legal fellow at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, told NBC News on Monday.

New York Assemblywoman Tremaine S. Wright, who co-sponsored the bill, has worn her hair natural for 17 years. She said in a statement the bill is deeply personal and is one she is proud of."No one should face discrimination at school or in the workplace, but too often we see people of color, particularly women, who are told their hair is unprofessional or not appropriate in public settings," Heastie said.

I didn't know people discriminate against natural hairstyles. I know some discriminate against bright pink, or blue. Where I work, if you color your hair it has to be of a natural look, not neon. And I understand requiring it to be washed.

My hair grows naturally into a mullet I want the same treatment.

That durn mess is ugh!

“Discrimination based on natural hair style” , is this in America?

As long as they can keep all of it under a hairnet while preparing food?

This is most important law for New York! No more problems here

As long as I do not find hair in my food , I could really care less. Some jobs do have dress codes for safety reasons so as long as this does not effect that I am fine. Long hair around machinery can get someone killed.

naturalhair

Is there a difference between a black person having a massive afro and a white person having hair down to their waist? Will this law protect hippies?

Republican's cry tears of rage

The hairstyle is called a Natural, What? Still can’t relate? Make America great again try Brill Cream.

The black Afro is a work of art.

Is this what our elected officials have been n their plate. OMG this is a Nation of idiots in local & Federal Governments. We need to hire Nanny’s or babysitters.

Congrats CA & NY All of 🇺🇸should follow, crazy this has to be a Bill of Human Rights Law!

How sad this was ever a thing, and the resources that have gone into changing it. Strange world.
