Featuring illuminated floats inspired by favorite Christmas movies, the parade kicks off at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, and follows a route through West Dundee, Carpentersville and East Dundee. It replaces the Spirit of Christmas Parade, which was a Saturday morning event for East and West Dundee.
The idea is for Main Street to be dark so the parade’s lights reflect off the Fox River, said Melissa Hernandez, president of the Northern Kane County Chamber of Commerce, which is sponsoring the parade with the three villages.Doing something more elaborate and at night is an idea that’s been around for a few years that’s finally coming to fruition, she said.
Santa Claus will be the parade’s guest of honor, joining in the procession after visiting with children at 4:30 p.m. forat Carpentersville’s Triangle Park and helping with the village’s 5:30 p.m. tree lighting ceremony. In order to accommodate the cavalcade, area roads, including Main Street, will need to close by 6 p.m., Hernandez said. Arriving early is encouraged, she said, and suggested parking areas can be found on the“The Dickens in Dundee festivities that we have all come to know and love will happen on Friday,” Hernandez said, and this will be the highlight of activities planned for Saturday.
Riverside Parade of Lights will have 35 units, no marching bands and walking groups will be involved because of safety concerns with the darkness in some areas, she said. For the same reason, candy won’t be thrown from the floats although the chamber plans to hand out bags of candy to the children who attend, she said.
