New Jersey and Atlanta moved to issue stricter mask requirements, as mayor and governors across the country work to quell a surge in infections

Texas mandated masks last week after a surge of infections slammed the state. While Gov. Greg Abbott’s order states that people who don’t comply will face fines of up to $250, NPRthat some law enforcement officials in the state are refusing to enforce the new rules.

"I believe in our constitutional rights, and this is borderline infringing on some of those constitutional rights in my belief," Jason Bridges, the sheriff in Nacogdoches County, said in a Facebook video, adding later that he is in favor of voluntary mask wearing. “Atlanta is going to do it today because the fact of the matter is that COVID-19 is wreaking havoc on our city, specifically black and brown communities with higher death rates,” Bottoms said on MSNBC on Wednesday.
