An empty parking lot is seen at an AMC movie theater in Clifton, N.J, on April 5.

In the suit filed on Monday in U.S. District Court in Trenton, the cinema chains acknowledge the danger posed by COVID-19. "Plaintiffs support fair and reasonable actions by the government to address that risk. However, the government-mandated total closure of movie theatres is neither fair nor reasonable, and is instead a violation of Plaintiffs' First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and freedom of expression, Equal Protection of the laws, Due Process under the law, and is a Taking of property without just compensation," the lawsuit says.

They say Murphy and Persichilli have made"unconstitutional and unlawful distinctions in allowing certain places of public assembly to reopen, while requiring movie theatres to remain closed." The plaintiffs are seeking an injunction to stop New Jersey from enforcing orders that prevent movie houses from opening"simultaneously" with other, comparable venues.Bow Tie Cinemas, BJK Entertainment, and Community Theaters are also plaintiffs in the suit.

Bring back drive-in theaters.

Oh yes profit over life!!! The worst pamdemic to hit our country since the Spanish Influenza of the 1800s where over 1 million died and movie theaters are suing!!! SICK

We all need to start suing to reopen our states

These movie theater chains don't care about the public or anyone's health. They care about profits. Profits are more important then keeping people alive. AMC CineMark RegalCinemas

Greed, is going to kill people.

Well, I'm not sitting in a theater with other people....not yet...

Good.

AMC, Regal and Cinemark can reopen as long as employees and patrons can sue the hell out of these companies for knowingly risking the lives of said employees and patrons. No liability shields.

Sue all you want.. I will not be attending for sometime in the foreseeable future no matter what happens with your case...

Nice to know where AMCTheatres Cinemark RegalCinemaLtd stand with the health of their customers. Theaters have been proven to be a high risk for transmission, but they’re cool with it.

Open for what? I mean, there's no new movies coming out anytime soon anyway. What are they gonna show?

Definitely. Viral pandemics shouldn’t stop companies like Disney from their god given right to flood the market with their thrilling films.

Oh no, poor movie theaters... I feel so bad for them 😒

I HEARD WALMART IS DOING DRIVE IN THEATERS...

All of the entertainment retailers such as cinemas, trampoline parks, bowling alleys, etc are feeling the pain. They are the ones that are truly getting hurt in this shut down. Covid cre bankruptcy

Win the case, lose your business. I will never support a business so blinded by money that they will put there customers lives at risk.

I’m guessing there is small print somewhere holding these movie theaters harmless if someone catches COVID at their venues? If you buy the ticket, do you agree not to sue if you get sick?

Can we sue those theaters for reckless endangerment?

They know people will adapt without and realize that sitting around in the dark with a bunch strangers paying $18 for soda and popcorn is kind of dumb.

I hope the studios look at this and realize the theaters are an outdated concept putting profit over lives and begin releasing VOD and streaming concurrent with theatrical.

Is it worth risking a visit to the ICU to see a first-run film in a movie theater?

Have they seriously not seen that scene in Outbreak?

Good to know AMCTheatres Cinemark and RegalMovies cares about customer safety. idk which customers if they're all DEAD!

We are all just ticks on the stock market. Sooner we realize that the better off we will be.

Why only NJ? NJ, NY and Conn are all in unison on this one...

What the fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

YEAH! And let's all be able to smoke our cigarettes in planes, trains, buses, theaters, restaurants, offices, schools.....

I look forward to their court case being thrown out of court. Temp limiting your rights for an emergency is built into the Constitution. In 1905 the Supreme Court affirmed a Govs authority to set these temporary health crisis laws. Your welcome!

Dems are going to get their asses handed to them come November. They've made millions of people go broke over a virus that is slightly more lethal than the flu.

They can’t even clean popcorn off seats between showings.... Canceling my regal unlimited.

When does the state get to sue them for filling hospital beds

Stay strong GovMurphy you’re right

I hope they win. Why should Jeff Bizos get all the income instead of small businesses?

Let them open on one condition... they accept full liability for any virus transfer proven to have taken place under their roof.

Negative air? Upgraded ventilation?

I dont blame them. If restaurants can open with limited capacity, why cant they?

Who will actually go to a movie theater now?

Sure.
