NCAA Tournament notes: San Diego's Yale connection, Alabama north, and pleasant memories from 2014

As San Diego State's basketball team was walking out of Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena after its open practice Thursday, Yale was walking in. They weren’t complete strangers. The Yale roster includes two players with local ties, junior guard Yassine Gharram and sophomore guard Devon Arlington . Both return to San Diego in the summer and play in the Swish Pro-Am league. Gharram is a regular at SDSU’s JAM Center practice facility and is tight with several current and former Aztecs.

” The familiarity runs in Spokane deeper than Yale’s roster. Chad Baker-Mazara, who played at SDSU in 2021-22 before leaving amid academic issues, is a starter at Auburn now. Alabama plays Charleston, two teams that SDSU beat last year on its run to the championship game, in the day’s third game. Saint Mary’s and Grand Canyon, both SDSU nonconference opponents this season, play in the fourth and final game. The Aztecs beat Saint Mary’s 79-54 in Las Vegas in a neutral-court event.
