N.J. must demand policies that invest in people, workers, communities, democracy and in our children’s future | Opinion

Just before Christmas, I ended up in an emergency room with a sick child and a sick elderly father. While waiting for several hours for their care, a group of police officers came into the emergency room and walked directly toward two young Latino men sitting anxiously in the back of the room. Most people didn’t look surprised, but I was immediately concerned for the two young men. I was torn between walking over to help them or staying put to look after my kin.

It is critical that in moments of political and societal uncertainty, we as people of goodwill, must start caring about each other’s welfare. These migrants are not 'asylum seekers'. They had 'asylum' at the first country they got to after leaving their situation. They are nation shopping for the best welfare package.
