The Appellate Court rejected the appeal of Michaelangelo Troisi, who was stopped by a Princeton police officer in November of 2019 and later fined $206 for texting while driving. Troisi claimed he was only briefly “activating” his phone to use Google Maps, but the Appellate Court said the momentary distraction violated state law.
According to the ruling, Troisi never denied punching in his password as he drove down State Road in Princeton on November 20, 2019. A Princeton police officer spotted him, pulled him over, and later testified against him municipal court. Troisi tried to make the case that he was turning on his phone to activate the GPS, not texting in the sense that he was having a conversation. But the Appellate Court rejected that argument and upheld two lower court rulings that said he broke the law.
