My retirement income is just $16,600 a year, but I want to retire in a beach town ‘where the sky is blue and the water warm’ — where should I go?

I read your story from the couple who had $95,000 in retirement income and wanted a beach town to retire in. Well, my retirement income is $16,600 per year. Is there a place I can go where the sky is blue and the water warm? Where can an average person like me retire?I hear you — it’s frustrating to read about people who get to live large in retirement when your reality is very different.

The cost of living is nearly 19% lower than the U.S. average, according to Sperling’s Best Places, and you can find small apartments to rent for under $600 a month. Plus, Mississippi is tax friendly to retirees, with SmartAsset noting that “Mississippi exempts all forms of retirement income from taxation, including Social Security benefits, income from an IRA, income from a 401 and any pension income.

But, as I wrote in this recent column for a woman looking to retire near the ocean on between $800 and $1,000 a month, there are some places that fit within your budget. Its good to know what you want, having dreams. Maybe, you can visit your dreams, up to one week out of the year, if you are lucky, while you live a life within your budget means somewhere else, a whole lot cheaper. That means you'll have to save for 'month 13' from your income.
