MTA officials pledged to add more security cameras, aiming to have live coverage of all 472 New York City subway stations by end of year

Transit officials vowed Wednesday to add more security cameras throughout the New York City subway and two regional commuter-rail systems to combat crime and help riders feel safer on their commutes.

Mr. Foye said the transit system is safer than it was a decade or more ago, but the rate of crimes and misdemeanors on a per rider basis on today’s system is worse than before the Covid-19 pandemic. The subway, which used to carry 5.5 million riders on an average weekday, recently surpassed 2 million weekday riders for the first time since last spring.

The MTA, a state-controlled agency, mostly relies on New York City’s police department to patrol the subway’s 472 stations and more than 650 miles of track. Kathleen O’Reilly, the New York Police Department’s chief of transit, told MTA board members that crime is at historic lows and that transit officials must change their messaging to boost public confidence in the system.

MTA officials say tens of thousands of cameras are distributed across the subway, commuter rail and bus systems on vehicles and in stations and facilities such as yards. Most of the cameras are solely for recording purposes, but many cameras, including those in stations, can be viewed in real-time. Officials say the authority aims to have live camera feeds at every subway station by the end of the year, up from 70% of stations presently.

Hopefully the cameras will include facial recognition technology MTA NYPDTransit.

But will they stop.crime if they see it. Or will they let people playfully knife each other.

It will be a lot of facial recognition going on . Hopefully it will be able to prevent crime also..

The bum that shit his pants and called me a white devil doesn’t care about being recorded I can assure you. I am attacked daily in NYC. I not happy that my murder will be recorded in 1080p🤪

The worst subway ever... Not sure how New York people survive after those cars and the stations.

I think it’s more like “The cameras will capture crimes but the perpetrators shall continue to face no consequences”.

Great! Now you could watch a video of yourself being mugged, or maybe watch homeless take a dump

How in the hell did they not already have this? They have a huge budget and after 9/11 I assumed this was done 19 years ago

You mean they don't already? WTF?

You have a phone or PC, I will help you earn $105 every day LETS GO✅ Pm me

Ok, this enables us to see more crimes on tv hours after they were committed. It would be more useful if NYPD starts showing presence to PREVENT crime and to spare us horrific scenes on tv.

Having a video of an alleged perp has limited value in combatting crime when an apprehended perp is immediately released. NYC deserves better

Anyone thought about more well paid, well trained, well armed police?

Cameras see the crime but won’t stop it
