Six movie theater chains, including AMC Entertainment, Cinemark and Regal Cinemas, have sued New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy for refusing to let them resume operations, even after allowing churches, retailers and indoor shopping malls to reopen during the coronavirus pandemic.

Led by the National Association of Theatre Owners, the lawsuit is the industry’s first resulting from the pandemic. “COVID-19 represents a serious public health risk, and plaintiffs support fair and reasonable actions by the government to address that risk,” the complaint said. “However, the government-mandated total closure of movie theatres is neither fair nor reasonable.”

Murphy’s office and the office of acting state Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli, who is also a defendant, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
