Columbus Day has been a political lightning rod for states, cities and municipalities around the US for years now. Most recently, Vermont and Maine joined the small contingency of states that have renamed the October holiday to"Indigenous Peoples' Day" to recognize the native populations that were displaced and decimated after Christopher Columbus and other European explorers reached the continent.
Technically, Columbus Day is a federal holiday, which means it is recognized by the US government and thus brings the closure of non-essential government offices, and, usually, places like post offices and banks. But states and local governments can choose not to observe a federal holiday. And, as is the case with a growing number of places, change the name and intent of the October holiday altogether.
But Columbus brought so much badly needed DIVERSITY to the New World
Is everything okay with you, guys? Have you ever studied the life of Columbus? He has only discovered a continent. He didn’t do any genocide. He was an Italian chef sailor, hired by Spain to explore the Ocean. He he died poor and alone, after having discovered your continent.
I simply can't stop laughing!! what's the problem with you guys!?
The man was a genocidal racist, there's no space on earth for such scum. Serves as a deterrent to others hoping to imitate him. He may have been worse than Hitler
Either we OBSERVE ALL U.S. HOLIDAYS, or we DON'T! DontPickAndChoose! 😒
Yup, Do away with Columbus Day and make election day a national holiday

Can do this, but look at what happened when some states chose not to recognize MLK day as a paid holiday. Many of these states where he never set foot, all now have streets named for him. He is deserving, but there needs to remain choices.
Ridiculous!
Makes sense, considering Columbus 'discovered' Central and South America 500 years after the Vikings 'discovered' North America
The Flat Earthers at it again
It is a shame that he discovered our country.
I'm offended that a number of schools use Aztecs as a mascot. Streets & parks also carry the name. Aztecs engaged in barbaric human sacrifice for their religious practices. This inhumane behavior should not be celebrated. Change the names. KofC Sons_of_Italy Columbus
Is it me or does CNN have a agenda?
It should be replaced with Natives Day.
No one knows why Columbus Day was made a federal holiday! When you understand that it was in response to the largest mass lynching in US history
One day it will be known as Trump Day

By discovering America brought new explorers bringing modernization to the indigenous people that had stone tipped arrows. Taking over lands terrible and has been done in the tribes themselves in conquests. How many of us enjoying the richness of America would not be here today?
I discovered America... Christopher Columbus is the devil
I think it's a simple gesture to not honor a guy who wasn't a nice person to begin with, let alone the genocide that occurred because of him.
If you don’t support history then you’ll fail to prosper from it.
What a joke? The guy discovered a freaking hemisphere. I think he deserves a little credit.
Election Day would make a GREAT replacement for Columbus Day !
If you get Columbus Day off, you probably work for the government.
