Moderate Utah Republicans will look to stave off farther-right challengers at a state GOP convention that tends to favor the most conservative contenders. All eyes are on the crowded race to succeed U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney.

FILE - Utah ’s 3rd Congressional District Republican incumbent John Curtis speaks during an election night party, Nov. 3, 2020, in Sandy, Utah . Curtis announced he is jumping into the race Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, for the Utah U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Mitt Romney . FILE - Republican Utah House Speaker Brad Wilson walks on to the stage before announcing that he is running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Mitt Romney , during a rally on Sept. 27, 2023, in Draper, Utah .

The pool of nearly a dozen Republicans vying to replace Romney includes a congressman, a former state legislative leader and the lawyer son of Utah’s longest-serving U.S. senator. While some have sought to align themselves with farther-right figures such as Trump and Utah’s other senator, Mike Lee, others have distanced themselves in an effort to appeal to the widest swath of voters.

Wilson, 55, has endorsed Trump’s reelection bid and promises to be a “conservative fighter” on Capitol Hill. Wilson will likely appeal to convention delegates, who tend to be more conservative, while Curtis could have broader appeal among primary voters, Curry said.
