Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch says he has to replace some the department's aging fleet with pickup trucks , instead of the preferred Tahoe SUVs that may better store tactical gear and could be safer for deputies to drive during high speed chases. The sheriff says he simply can't get around the low inventory of Tahoe's and needs to get newer vehicles on the road now.

Burch says since he couldn't get Tahoe's, he ordered 20 Ford and 20 Chevrolet pickup trucks that are in the process of about two a week being outfitted with the patrol package and police gear deputies need. He says they're on borrowed time with some of their current fleet. The trucks aren't Burch's first pick. He's not keen on storing gear in what, so far, have proven to be watertight units in the bed of the trucks. He also worries about the safety of his deputies if they're involved in a chase driving a pickup truck.
