An estimated one in six students is buying school assignments from so-called 'essay mills.'

in January that Oxbridge Essays, which says it has sold more than 70,000 essays, posted misleading claims on its website that its services are risk-free for students.It's harder for teachers to detect contract cheating than other forms of cheating, such as plagiarism.

The software detects inconsistencies in students' writing, such as the sudden appearance of Oxford commas or double spaces after periods, where students had previously used single spaces. Loller says this is an effective strategy for identifying problematic essays. But there's a much bigger problem than detection, which is proving that a student actually cheated.
