If you are taking home more in your paycheck and not ‘overpaying’ in your taxes, then you will get a smaller refund.
Common sense should prevail that if you’re not paying as much into a system your most likely going to get less back from the same.

Lots of people here crying. The withholding schedule was changed so that you would get more of your money up front. So instead of claiming 3 or 4 dependents on your tax schedule you should pay attention. The people who are affected are in the higher tax income brackets.

Eliminating the individual deduction really hurts those who itemize (like me, a home owner). Our withholdings were the same as 2017, but Federal refund went from $2500 to $0. That's summer vacation for my family of 4.

I used to take deductions for charity, employee business expenses, medical expenses, dependent, and small business expenses for a side gig that were all eliminated, capped or had higher thresholds. I don’t own property. Paid higher withholding AND still had penalties.

Amount of refund has no relationship to effective tax rate. Compare total income and total taxes paid 2017 vs 2018. If your tax rate is really higher, it’s bc you paid more than $10K in state/local taxes and/or have a mortgage $750K.
