Mayor's plan would replace Mobile Civic Center with $300M modern facility, to open 2027 would disappear from the Mobile skyline soon, if a plan proposed by Mayor Sandy Stimpson is accepted by the city council.

While the city could not provide a timeframe on going to market for the bond issue, Director of Communications Candace Cooksey said “there can be no delay” on the project, beginning with demolition in August. The city is pursuing a very aggressive timeline, saying that project costs are likely to increase between $500,000 and $750,000 per month in the event of delays.

While renderings of the project will not be released to the public until a 2 p.m. Thursday press conference, media members were shown the drawings on Wednesday. The plans show the new, rectangular Arena will be built to the east of its current location, closer to the current location of the theater. According to members of the mayor’s staff, this will move the venue, capable of seating 10,000, farther away from the Church Street East residential community to help abate noise issues from events.

Under Mayor Stimpson, the City of Mobile has not borrowed money since he took office in 2013, and the city’s debt has decreased from $311 million in 2013 to $119 million today. Through efforts like refinancing of bond debt, the city now has the means to accomplish the desire of replacing the venue, Stimpson said.

This new facility will be uniquely designed to support Mobile’s Mardi Gras traditions while providing a state-of-the-art venue capable of bringing in major acts that previously drove through the Port City en route to other destinations. To ensure the highest level of programming and customer experience, the City of Mobile intends to partner with Oak View Group as part of a multi-year operational agreement that includes the new civic arena, the Mobile Convention Center and the Saenger Theatre.

Paired with top-tier programming, this world-class facility will bring 400,000+ new visitors to downtown Mobile annually. As the global leader in live experience venue development, management, and premium hospitality, OVG is a natural partner for this effort. OVG owns and operates a wide range of venues globally, including stadiums, arenas, theaters, convention centers and cultural attractions.
