) - Only a few hours left until Mobilians find out what the future holds for the Mobile Civic Center.FOX10 News is told the mayor is reportedly proposing to demolish the structure.Others say just upgrade it.Just last month the council approved $286,000 for an emergency repair to the theater wall.Brand Leege who owns the Dauphine Shoeteria downtown says the building has outlived its use and isn’t worth the money to keep it up.
“It’s gotten, it’s too small for Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras has gotten so big. We need something but we also need to have it working too,” Leege said. “We need to have shows and concerts and Broadway plays. We haven’t had a Broadway play here in years.”One plan was a shift, the other was an embrace.Winston Bennett who owns Geometrix downtown says leave it where it is, but just make it better.
“You know what I been in downtown Mobile for a long long time. And I really don’t think they should tear down the Civic Center it’s a landmark in Mobile,” Bennett said. “A lot of things happened there. Just upgrade it. That’s all, just upgrade it.”Copyright 2024 WALA. All rights reserved.
