Mayor Adams imposes curfew at select NYC migrant shelters after Times Square shooting

Mayor Eric Adams is imposing a curfew at select migrant shelters across the city starting on Monday, city officials said.of one suspect: a teen who had been staying at a migrant shelter, according to officials. The curfew will run from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. at 20 migrant shelters hosting a combined 3,608 people – a fraction of the 200 emergency shelter sites that are helping to house the tens of thousands of migrants entering the city each month, according to estimates.

In a statement to Gothamist on Sunday, Adams’ administration said that imposing a curfew will help ensure citywide safety. “New York City continues to lead the nation in managing this national humanitarian crisis, and that includes prioritizing the health and safety of both asylum seekers in our care and New Yorkers who live in the communities surrounding the emergency shelters we manage,” City Hall spokesperson Kayla Mamelak said in a statement.“It's totally counterproductive,” said Joshua Goldfein, a staff attorney for the Homeless Rights Project. People are working, they're working late.

The authorities arrested a 15-year-old boy – who they said immigrated from Venezuela last year – the NYPD said at a press conferenceThe teen is also a suspect in two other incidents, including another shooting in Times Square and a robbery in the Bronx, officials said. On Saturday, authorities said the teen would be charged as an adult.

The curfew is being imposed at shelter sites at: 455 Jefferson St., Austell Place, Greater Eternal Baptist Church, Christ Disciples Intl Ministries, Ridgewood Presbyterian Church, BK Way, Hotel RL, Imperial Hotel, Orchard Street Hotel, Quality Inn JFK, Redford Hotel, Sleep Inn, The Gatsby Hotel, El Rancho Motel, the Essence JFK, the VybeBrooklyn, Voyage Hotel, Americana Inn HPD, Hotel Merit and the Holiday Inn Express Brooklyn.
