The Mavs are 5-0 in clutch-time games after going 26-29 last season.

Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic reacts after a foul call in the second half in an NBA basketball game against the Charlotte Hornets, Sunday, Nov. 5, 2023, in Dallas. That Dallas team usually lost games like this one. On Sunday night, though, despite Luka Doncic struggling and frustrated and Charlotte leading by 13 three minutes into the second half, the Mavericks steeled themselves and pulled out a 124-118 victory in American Airlines Center.

One certainly could argue that the Mavericks had no business needing to win in clutch time against a 2-3 Charlotte team that played the previous night in Indianapolis. Having rally for this victory also won’t help Dallas’ chances in Monday’s quick-turn game at Orlando.. On Sunday, behind 23 points by Doncic and 18 apiece by Irving and Grant Williams, the Mavericks in Kidd’s words showed growth.

The Mavericks, though, won the third quarter, 33-22, and limited Charlotte to 9-of-27 shooting. After shooting 34% in the first half, Dallas shot 61.4% in the second, with the blitzkrieg culminating with a 41-point fourth quarter. “We have to do a better job of executing the game plan. The coaches put us in a great position. . . . We have to do a better job of making sure to listen to those guys.”
