The 43-year-old man who died Saturday while in sheriff’s custody at an Oceanside hospital had cancer, officials said Wednesday.
Oceanside police arrested Zeke Davis on June 28 on suspicion of violating a temporary restraining order, resisting arrest and battery on a peace officer, sheriff’s Lt. Joseph Jarjura said in a news release. While Davis was being booked into jail, department staff determined he was suffering from an underlying medical condition, and he was taken to a hospital, Jarjura said. Davis remained at the hospital until he died.The Medical Examiner’s Office later determined Davis died of cancer and that his death was natural, department officials said.A record 19 people died in county jails last year, with a 20th death occurring shortly after a person was released from custody for medical reasons.
