'In media women of color weren’t meant to be seen. We are the skeleton of fashion and culture. Raising people’s kids and cleaning people’s homes. We are silent workers.'

founder, Kiara Ventura, leads the discussion by centering artists of color and telling their stories through an informed gaze., she was dropping off her 6-foot tall paintings at my exhibition, titled “For Us,” in the Bronx. I was nervous. Before that, I was following her on Instagram in awe about how authentic she was when openly presenting her art and speaking about topics considered taboo like body hair and mental health.

Hernández was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to the Bronx at age six. Her mom worked at an office and father in a factory. Thereafter, her childhood became defined by learning English along with her family and hearing the noise of the NYC streets in a tight one-bedroom apartment that housed her parents and two siblings. Experiences like this later led her to be intrigued by the concept of space in her paintings.

Before making artwork she would ask herself, “What are the things I’ve never felt comfortable talking about?” She would reply with a painting. Hernández emphasizes that she is in a time of transition. In December 2017, she graduated with a Fine Arts degree. During September 2018, she quit her midtown barista job and has been focusing on painting and modeling since then. Her weekly concerns can range from negotiating deals to independently navigating herself through the art world and making decisions on where to place and price her work.
