Louisiana has shut down bars again, but not in New Orleans—yet

Louisiana became the latest state to announce a slate of new restrictions in response to the record spread of Covid-19, shutting down bars across much of the state and limiting capacity at other businesses.That includes most of the state, with a notable exception being Orleans Parish, where New Orleans is located., with gyms and other “nonessential retail” also restricted to the 50% limit.

Bars in New Orleans and other areas at or below the 5% positivity threshold can remain open at 25% capacity.Many Republican legislators are in strong opposition to Edwards’ restrictions. Sixty-five GOP state House members had signed a petition which they claimed would Edwards of his emergency authority, but the governor’s office challenged and a state judge ruled the Republican claim unconstitutional earlier this month."Holiday parties are a recipe for disaster right now,” Edwards said at a news conference Tuesday, echoing the views of
