This crypto investor’s road back from a year behind bars:

With no one looking over his shoulder, it was easy for Hannum to get lost in the crowd. He caused a bit of mischief here, a little chaos there, but it didn’t amount to much more than a stern warning before being released back to his mom. Eventually though, the tenor of those interactions began to change. “I started getting in a bunch of trouble” he says. “Just random run-ins with the law.”

Flash forward six to nine months, and “I was a kid who had way too much money for a kid. Bought a really nice car, which was a dumb idea. Bought my own apartment, which, you know, most kids in high school don’t have.” Things began to accelerate on all fronts. One thing lead to another, with petty incidents starting to pile up. Until that one fateful summer night when it all came crashing down.

Once in the program, Hannum excelled from day one. His good behavior and studious attitude eventually lead to even more special privileges on top of the already staggered progression program. He was allowed to leave the facility for the day to take the SAT, which he scored well on. Not a surprise, seeing as he had been the one teaching trigonometry to some of the older volunteers brought in to teach classes to the inmates.
