Beyond casting our individual ballots, we’ve got to engage with the reality of the voting landscape in order to create change.

, who’ve lost their right to vote due to a felony conviction. If I plan to vote early, that doesn’t change the fact that I may be staring down an hours-long wait, often outdoors and perhaps in extreme heat or cold. Some voters in Georgiato cast their vote. Was that part of their plan? Unlikely. Did they have to suck it up and deal with it anyway if they hoped to participate in democracy? You bet.

As voters cope with dire circumstances, there’s no shortage of supposedly feel-good voting stories popping up, presented as inspirational sources of hope. Mildred Madison, a 94-year-old woman in Michigan,that she traveled 300 miles each way to cast her vote in person because she was skeptical that she’d actually receive the absentee ballot she requested. She sounds like an incredible woman, and her personal grit and determination are, frankly, kick-ass.
