Tue, April 30th 2024 at 6:33 PMOn Tuesday, a group of local athletes and school officials visited the state capitol to speak on a "hot topic" in interscholastic sports.
6 News attended the Commerce Committee hearing and listened in on the debate for making a “separate playoff system” for public and private schools. In Pennsylvania, the debate of whether or not public and private and non-boundary schools should be able to compete in the same division arises year after year.House Bill 1983 was introduced by Representative Scott Conklin to allow the PIAA to separate the playoffs between public and private schools.
Conklin says the PIAA is hesitant to make changes because of a bill passed in 1972, but he says a 1974 amendment to that bill gives them that authority already. "PIAA I’m looking at you. You have the authority to do this. 1974 gives you that authority. You made the playoff system. You made the categories."“I honestly believe they're afraid of the lawsuits that may come. I honestly believe they're afraid of ending up in court with some of these non-boundary schools."Bald Eagle's athletic director Doug Dyke visited the capitol with three students to provide their insight on the bill.
