Rowling publicly opposed the newly enacted Hate Crime and Public Order Act in Scotland, challenging authorities to arrest her under the regulations.The law criminalizes “stirring up hatred” against individuals based on attributes such as age, religion, and gender identity. Rowling is critical of the legislation for not protecting women as a separate group and she believes it could inadvertently silence discussions on sex and biological gender.

As the Scottish government’s contentious hate crime law came into force on Monday, the author and gender-critical activist posted a thread on X saying the legislation was “wide open to abuse” after listing sex offenders who had described themselves as transgender alongside well-known trans women activists, describing them as “men, every last one of them”.
